Observing a Nation’s Turning Point: A Reflection on Change and Activism
Kenya is currently navigating a transformative period, one that is shaping its citizens in remarkable ways. As we witness these events unfold, it becomes clear that we are living through a defining moment in history. This era is cultivating a generation of thinkers, creators, educators, and change-makers poised to leave a lasting legacy. Generation Z, in particular, stands at the forefront of this shift, embracing its role with determination and resilience.
The digital age has opened up countless opportunities, including the realization that blogging, among other skills, can be a viable and rewarding career path. This awareness has motivated me to refine my craft, aspiring to achieve meaningful goals while contributing to the broader narrative. However, pursuing truth and expression in my beloved country—a nation I hold dear—comes with its own set of challenges. Despite this, my commitment to advocating for progress and speaking out remains steadfast.
The Kenyan Finance Bill 2024 has ignited a wave of concern and resistance. Initially hesitant to participate in demonstrations against the Bill, I was compelled to reconsider. The implications of the Bill, coupled with its potential to exacerbate existing hardships, made the choice clear: taking a stand is necessary. Peaceful protests have become a platform for citizens to voice their frustrations, though the confrontations often turn chaotic due to external forces.
At the core of these challenges lies a critical issue: the lack of widespread civic education. Many citizens are left uninformed about key policies and their impacts, relying instead on vague assurances from political leaders. This gap has enabled some politicians to exploit the public's trust, resulting in policies that seem disconnected from the realities faced by ordinary Kenyans. The introduction of VAT on essential items, such as sanitary pads, is a stark example of this disconnect, sparking outrage among the youth and beyond.
June 25, 2024, will undoubtedly be remembered as a day when Kenyan youth united in their frustration and resolve to demand accountability. While the present moment is fraught with challenges, it also carries the promise of growth and resilience. This period of struggle is a testament to the spirit of a nation ready to confront its challenges head-on and create a better future for all.
