Amazing Facts About The Tallest Mountain In Africa

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Rising over 5,895m (19,342 fts), it hosts Uhuru Peak, the highest point in the African continent. Being the 4th tallest mountain in the world, it is one of the seven world summits with Mount Everest being the 1st. It lies approximately 205 miles from the equator and about 140 miles or 225km south of Nairobi Kenya.

Mount Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones, Mawenzi, Shira and Kibo. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct but Kibo, the highest peak, is dormant and could erupt again. The most recent activity was about 200 years ago; the last major eruption was 360,000 years ago. It is not known when another eruption may occur but it may be devastating considering many locals live close to the majestic mountain such as in Moshi. Mawenzi is the 3rd highest peak in Africa after Kibo and Mount Kenya.

Kibo is the main target for the many aspiring climbers as it hosts the Uhuru Peak. Kilimanjaro can be seen from the Amboseli National Park on a clear day, from the top of Mount Kenya, and in most parts of the Taita Hills and Taveta.

Next time you are in Tanzania, consider the challenge of getting to the highest point in Africa. Although I know it's tough, I am also considering it too as many have successfully conquered the quest.

Welcome to Africa, home of the tallest free-standing mountain in the world!
