Teamwork and tech key in fighting crime, say DCI candidates.
Some were asked to explain their past work which had been raised in adverse reports received by the National Police Service Commission.
Candidates seeking to succeed former Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti have vowed to be team players if they get the job.
During the interviews, they were challenged to explain what they had learnt from their past bosses and all agreed team work is key to success in the war on crime.
Some were asked to explain their past work, which had been raised in adverse reports received by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC).
Sources said the candidates explained all they did was for the good of the country and was meant to ensure safety.
“The competition was stiff. They were all senior officers who seemed to understand what they want,” said an insider.
“Save for few issues which were raised on them and which were found to have happened because of security issues, they did well.”
Other officials said there were no graft issues raised on eight of the candidates.
“They all said they were millionaires at large. They are seasoned officers and have worked for more than 25 years each. You don’t expect them to be poor,” said another official when asked about their wealth.
The candidates pledged to employ technology among other resources in the fight against crime and also push for continuous studies for officers to enhance their capabilities.
Commission chairman Eliud Kinuthia said the 10 were suitable for the interviews and vetting.
“We will give a report by or before Friday which is the 14th day of the lapse of the period given,” Kinuthia said.
He said they had received various reports from Kenyans on the candidates and were considered in the vetting.
The sessions were closed doors because of security reasons, said Kinuthia.
“We are dealing with security issues and this will remain closed doors. We will make the report public later,” he said.
NPSC on Tuesday conducted the interviews and vetting on 10 candidates who had been shortlisted to fill the vacant position left by Kinoti.
The new DCI could be known by Friday. This is because the 14 days that the acting DCI Hamisi Massa was given to be in office lapse then.
Massa was named the acting DCI on September 30 after the exit of Kinoti.
The police employer started interviewing the candidates who had been shortlisted in a marathon exercise at the Kenya School of Government and retreated for analysis of their performance and awarding before naming the top three winners.
Sources said the candidates explained all they did was for the good of the country and was meant to ensure safety.
