On Monday, Juliana Cherera made an unexpected declaration shortly before Wafula Chebukati, the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, pronounced William Ruto the winner.

Kenyans were through a stressful week after voting on August 9, 2022, as they awaited the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to declare Kenya's fifth president.

The lengthy wait finally came to an end Monday night at the Bomas of Kenya when IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati declared William Ruto the winner.

Who is Juliana Cherera, then?

The IEBC Vice-Chairperson at the moment is Juliana Whonge Cherera.

On September 14, 2021, at the Supreme Court in Nairobi, she and Irene Cherop, Justus Abonyo, and Francis Wanderi were sworn in by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

Education.

Cherera has a master's degree in education from Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) and a bachelor's degree in education (arts) with a focus on geography and kiswahili from Kenyatta University.

She also completed coursework in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) at KNEC, Strategic Leadership and Development Program at Kenya School of Government, and Project Management at Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) (KSG).

While still employed at KSG, she also completed a Senior Management Course (SMC).

Career.

 

Cherera has worked in the education and management fields for more than 18 years, having started out as a teacher.

She was formerly a Chief Officer (CO) in the Strategic Delivery Unit of the Mombasa County Government.

Cherera was one of the leaders who guided and organized the Governor's food distribution operation under the banner of "Together For Mombasa" alongside partners and well-wishers.

Cherera serves as the Secretary to the Mombasa County Economic Recovery and Legacy Strategy in addition to being a Member of the Mombasa County Emergency Household Relief and Nutrition Support Project Coordination Committee.

Cherera is a member of the Kenya Devolution Support Program committee, according to her résumé.

She also serves as chair of the committee for stakeholder engagement, partnerships, and voter education.
