Elon Musk, the founder of NeuraLink Corporation has unveiled plans to merge human brain with A.I (Artificial Intelligence). The company is in the process of developing an implantable brain machine.

The ultra-high bandwidth machine will basically connect the computers with humans. The aim is to help, for instance, the paralyzed be able to operate computer and phone.

The system has been tested on rats and primates, particularly a monkey. Elon says that on the chip, the monkey was able to control a computer from its brain.

It is yet to be tested on human beings, which NeuraLink says will be done by end of 2020. Their focus will be on persons with severe neurological conditions.

“We hope to have this in a human patient by the end of next year,” Musk said.

The brain device consists of a tiny probe with more than 3,000 electrodes. These are attached to flexible threads, thinner than a human hair able to monitor the activity of 1,000 neurons.

During the first presentation of the device, the firm said that it (the device) would be able to target specific brain areas. This makes implantation surgically safer. Another advantage is that it would analyze recordings using machine-learning. This means it would work out what type of stimulation is best for a particular patient.

Because it is somehow difficult to implant the system into the brains, Neuralink has gone ahead to develop a ‘neurosurgical robot’ to combat the challenge. This robot is capable of automatically inserting 6 threads (192 electrodes) in a minute.

“In photos, it looks something like a cross between a microscope and a sewing machine,” says the white paper on Neuralink’s brain system.

It is said that if this brain-computer technology works, it will pick up signals from across your brain and translate them into a code. The device ‘host’ then will be able to do things like operate a computer, or maybe even see in case it’s a blind person.

According to Elon Musk, A.I will catch up with human beings and of course leave them behind. He therefore believes that the brain chip will help greatly in ensuring that the human race moves with the advancing A.I.
