Building A High Performance Teams Will Require You to:
- Define Your Teams Purpose: For clarity and accountability sake, first set up your team goals. These goals should be clear enough and indicate the individual and collective role each member plays within the team. The goals should show how success looks like. Once you’re done with this, a framework (process) for achieving these goals can be developed.
- Establish a Diverse Team: it is important to have a set of people with diverse skills, strengths, and who closely aligned to your business, customers and stakeholders. Why so? The more varied your team is, the more competent it will be in holistic thinking and execution of tasks resulting in high performance.
- Decide On the Decision Making Process: Meet and Agree how on how decisions will be made within the team. Be it through consensus or democracy the method must be consented by majority of team members. This will avoid infighting and time wastage when making organizations decisions.
If you are dealing with a Virtual team, all team decisions should be guided by the principal of mutual respect and trust for each other.
- Establish a Conducive Learning Environment: the best work achievements are earned through committing and learning from mistakes, not through perfectionism. Developing a transparent culture in your organisation that promotes continuous self-improvement and assessment will make your team more skilled and knowledge, thus highly effective.
- Promote Feedback: Replicating the Manufacturing industry way of feedback, you can develop a system where team members receive constant feedback as they do their job. This usually helps deal with performance issues while keeping your team motivated to perform. Scheduling short breakfast or lunch meetings as a team can additionally help foster team synergy.
- Diversify Communication Technology: technology is making organization communication better by reducing the barriers to communication. Your high performance team should therefore have access to various forms of Communication (Mobile, Video Call, group charts, Whatsapp groups….) so that there are no communication barriers affecting execution of tasks.
- Develop an Exclusive Reward System: though applauded for encouraging team work, be careful not to overemphasis on individual rewards in your reward system. When used incautiously, Individual reward systems cause internal conflicts and resentment between team Members. A better approach would be to strike some sort of balance between team and individual rewards.
- Identify and Attract New Talent: building a team is a process of continuous improvement and assessment. Therefore if needed; don’t shy away from adding more talent to your High performance team as the trademark of most successful Organization teams is talent sourcing.
